The concept of dental radiology has gradually evolved in recent years, becoming so-called digital radiology which has the advantage of reduced exposure to radiation. Despite the advantages of two dimensional X-rays, we currently use 3D systems such as the dental CT scan. This gives us much more accurate information about buccodental diseases and the temporomandibular joint, besides being a fundamental tool in the early diagnosis of tumour-type lesions.

Orthopantomography: this gives an overview of the mouth and joints.
- Position of the teeth during eruption in the growth of children
- Position of the wisdom teeth.
- Intraoral periapical radiology: for greater clarity in specific areas. Early diagnosis of dental cavities and periodontal disease.
A scanner or dental CT scan is a three-dimensional X-ray that captures a full or partial volume of the mouth, which we process using computer software to view; measure accurately; diagnose and plan numerous treatments and detect diseases of the jaws which otherwise we could hardly see.
The 3D icat dental scanner helps us see accurately and in detail all the hard structures of the mouth: both teeth and bone. This enables us to see and measure the bone around the teeth in three dimensions, thus assessing what type of treatment would best suit the case. This is recommended for:
- Patients with periapical infections: when tooth decay develops, this affects the nerves of the teeth which produce a source of infection at the apex of the tooth. CBCTs enable us to see the extent of the injury.
- Implant Patients: these give us the chance to see and accurately measure the amount of bone in the area where we are to fit the implants; the adjacent vital anatomical structures (the mandibular nerve and maxillary sinus) and also enables us to simulate fitting the implants virtually, so as to be able to plan each case with precision before starting.
- Orthodontic Patients: We can more accurately assess bone problems and interdental relationships than with classical orthopantomography and teleradiography. This is indicated especially for adolescents and adults.
It also enables us to do Guided Surgery or Minimally Invasive Surgery: fitting implants using a template based on virtual planning using computer software.
