Our first goal, even before dental treatment, is the prevention of the onset of disease. Since the accumulation of bacterial plaque around the teeth is responsible for most dental problems, our goal is its removal.
We know that bacterial plaque (biofilm) contains a number of different bacteria. Some of these are responsible for tooth decay (they destroy the tooth enamel) and others are responsible for periodontal diseases (gingivitis and periodontitis) as they affect the gums and reabsorb bone which supports the teeth.
How do we avoid the accumulation of bacterial plaque between teeth which is so harmful to us? VERY EASILY; Through a preventive programme which has two different elements:
– Proper daily oral hygiene at home, which requires a learning process and sometimes monitoring by a hygienist.
– Periodical visits to the dentist for dental cleaning and removal of accumulated plaque and tartar. The frequency of these visits ranges from every 4 months to once a year.
If you follow our preventive programme you will enjoy your teeth for many more years and will save yourself problems and discomfort, in addition to saving time and money.
This prevention programme for oral health has a second aspect for patients already treated, in order to ensure that the results obtained will last many years and that they do not develop any new diseases.
The frequency of periodontal disease (pyorrhoea) is so widespread that it is now primarily responsible for tooth loss in adults. The main cause of this disease is the accumulation of plaque between teeth. It has been studied and shown that periodical removal of this accumulation of dental plaque through professional hygiene prevents the progression of periodontitis or pyorrhoea. Therefore, we have a preventive programme consisting of regular hygiene, from every 6 months to once a year. After more than 30 years of experience we can assure you that this produces excellent results.
People with healthy mouths also need periodical and professional preventive care to remove dental plaque and tartar. This way they can enjoy a healthy, clean and attractive mouth.
Tooth decay has for many years been the main dental problem in humans. Periodical application of fluoride acts as a supplement for fluoridated toothpastes that are used daily. So, to avoid cavities, you should have periodical professional cleaning where a concentrated fluoride gel is also applied.
