We are in the middle of August and immediately pop to mind concepts such as sun, beach, holidays, resting… To disconnect and relax for a few days is necessary for everyone to recharge our batteries and face another new phase with enthusiasm. However, it is important to remain vigilant with your oral health also on holidays because there are many myths around oral health.

In case you have not visited your detist before going on holidays, we would like to take advantage of these lines to prevent you from believing the mentioned false dental myths. It will only take 5 minutes of your time to read about them:

1.Hard bristle brushes and strong mouthwashes are better than soft ones:

No. Indeed, efficient tooth brushing can be achieved by using a soft bristle brush. What is more, agressive brushing can damage our gums. And regarding mouthwashes, it is better to use those free of alcohol. Here you have a short guide of proper mouthwashes.

2.Chewing gum substitutes tooth brushing:

In case of being away from home and not having with us our dental hygiene kit, a sugarfree chewing gum may stimulate the production of saliva, which helps to maintain a clean mouth. As we have said on previous occasions, saliva cleans our denture in a natural way by removing food residues. However, under no circumstances the gum substitutes a toothbrush.

3.Bicarbonate to whiten the teeth:

No way. Bicarbonate is very abrasive and may seriously damage the enamel. Tooth whitening should be only carried out by a dentist. Are you thinking about improving the appearance of your teeth? Here you have our treatments.

4.There’s no remedy for bad breath:

Some of the causes that provoke bad breath or halitosis can be controlled and avoided. Furthermore, if we maintain a proper dental hygiene at home and we visit the dentist regularly, we can prevent suffering from halitosis.

5.If I don’t feel pain, tooth decays do not exist:

False. A tooth decay can be present, mainly in the enamel, without giving any sign of pain. Moreover, if the tooth decay reaches the dentine area and the tooth loses the vitality of the tooth nerve, you may not notice any pain. Visiting your dentist is the best way to know if you have a tooth decay. Now you can make no excuses because we are open during August and you only have to make an appointment.

As always, do not hesitate to ask your dentist in case of having doubts!
